A Chicago native, Charles graduated high school from Crete-Monee high school and proceeded to get his associates degree from South Suburban College and his Bachelor degree from Calumet College of St. Joseph, majoring in Science. While at Calumet, Charles played two seasons of basketball. He is now currently finishing up on his Masters degree. Prior to becoming a counselor at SFDS, he was a science teacher at 21st Century High School where he also coached the varsity basketball team.
