Our History

In 1893, the St. Francis de Sales parish school was established, operated by the School Sisters of Mary Immaculate from Joliet. By the late 1890s, the school introduced high school courses. By the autumn of 1937, in response to the growing need for higher education, St. Francis de Sales transformed into a four-year high school with 180 students enrolled. The school awarded diplomas to the first graduating class of 21 seniors on June 11, 1939. During the 1950s, there was a notable surge in enrollment, prompting the need for facility expansion to address the upcoming challenges.

The East Side community embraced the challenge and on February 19, 1956, construction began on a new building. On April 20, 1958, Monsignor Alphonse Memmesheimer, along with Samuel Cardinal Stritch and Albert Cardinal Meyer, oversaw the dedication of the new St. Francis de Sales High School. Since 1962, the school has been supported by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

New Beginnings

St. Francis de Sales has collaborated with Big Shoulders Fund since 2013-2014, establishing a significant partnership with the organization. Big Shoulders Fund serves as the primary supporter and financier of our school, offering financial aid, academic guidance, marketing assistance, and strategic planning support. By partnering with Big Shoulders Fund, we are committed to providing top-notch education to our students and have collaborated to establish a sustainable financial framework for the future longevity of our institution.

In 2020, the school appointed Dr. Roni Facen, an alumna, educator, and community activist, as Principal and CEO. Dr. Facen credits her St. Francis de Sales education for providing her with opportunities. The belief and support from teachers and staff fueled her potential, and she aims to offer similar opportunities to current students. Recognizing the significance of St. Francis de Sales High School to the South East Side of Chicago and the new generation of Pioneers, she is dedicated to its importance to the community.
